My position falls somewhat between these two poles. Two symposium contributors, Anthony Gaughan and Derek Muller, believe that while we are not necessarily in the “best of times,” we can hope that forces such as free speech and a modern history of honest elections in the United States can save us from a November election meltdown. įour of the contributors to this fine and generous set of Boston University Law Review symposium essays on Election Meltdown-Atiba Ellis, Ellen Katz, Lisa Marshall Manheim, and Lorraine Minnite -believe things are even worse than I described when my book first appeared in February, and particularly that systemic racism and voter suppression have contributed to a crisis not just of election administration but of American democratic legitimacy. and beyond, and the President’s continued insistence without evidence that extended mail-in voting necessitated by the pandemic will lead to a stolen or rigged election. It is easy to assume that the author of a book called Election Meltdown thinks we are in a Dickensian “worst of times.” Adding to the feelings of despair is the condition of the United States since the book appeared in February 2020, with more than 200,000 Americans dead from COVID-19 and millions more affected, systemic racism brought to the forefront of the national consciousness by the killing of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter protests, President Trump’s decision to use force against protestors in Washington D.C. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way-in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.” - Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities Hasen, Election Meltdown: Dirty Tricks, Distrust, and the Threat to American Democracy (2020) Optimism and Despair About a 2020 “Election Meltdown” and Beyond Compare your results with the global average and see how fast you can surf the web. Action-adventure, Platform, Action, Adventure In the traditions of the Catholic faith, roses have little to do with love and romance. In these cases, the flower is likely to symbolize friendship, care, and well-being. However, what about when you give a bunch of yellow roses to a sick friend or blue roses to a recent graduate? When the flower is red, this meaning becomes even more enhanced. For example, the flower probably does mean love and romance when presented to a love interest or significant other. Of course, you must consider the context when deciphering the meaning of one or a bunch of roses. After all, it’s hard not to when movies, TV shows, books, flower shops, artwork, photography, and other mediums routinely use roses as symbols of these qualities. Though Gertrude Stein once said, “Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose,” if you are like most people, when you see a rose, you think of love and romance. Now, the total length of box and whiskers is equal to the range. The highest and lowest values of a given set a plotted at the end of on a whiskers graph. The definition of range in math can be given as the difference between the maximum value and minimum value within the set. The range is also used in other mathematical formulas of statistics such as standard deviation.Īnother application of Range can be seen in whiskers plot or boxplot. They are called the mean, median and mode. It is very easy to calculate as it involves basic arithmetic operations. An average is a single ‘typical’ value that is used to represent a set of values. Range offers a brilliant way to understand the spread of a given data set. So, if your middle values are varying largely it’s better to opt other methods such as mean, median and mode. Also, range is ineffective even if the middle values are changed but the largest and smallest remain the same.As we can see that range of class B is smaller than class A, this means marks distribution in class B is more clustered (more close) in class B than class A.Just add the two numbers and take their average or divide by two.įormula to mid range: \frac is 66 and 56 respectively. Besides, it is also one of the easiest ones to understand. Mid range is the number between the lowest and highest value of a given set of numbers. What Does Range Mean In Math The range is one of the terms that is used very often in math. If you cannot do it orally, try to arrange the set in ascending order and then take the highest and lowest value. Identify the smallest and largest number from the set. Range = Largest number on the set – smallest number on the set To find range, subtract the least value from the highest value from a given set of numbers. Also, it helps to identify the gap between the largest and the smallest number. Range helps us to understand the span or spread of data. Some other similar methods are mean, median and mode that help us to give information and draw conclusions about a given data set. Example 3: Calculate the range for the given frequency distribution. (b) If the ages of the group of boys and girls are combined, then the range will be: 17 4 13. It is one of the methods used to find the central tendency in statistics. Solution: (a) The range for group of girls 10 6 4. You find it by putting the numbers in order from the smallest to largest and covering up one number on. The range of a function is all the possible values of the dependent variable y. Median: the middle number in the set of values. The domain and range of a function is all the possible values of the independent variable, x, for which y is defined. Range: Given a set of numbers, range is defined as the difference between the highest value and the lowest value. The mean, mode, median and range are defined as: Mean: an average which is found by adding up all the values in a set of data and dividing it by the total number of values you added together.
